This year, the 250th anniversary of Captain James Cook’s voyage on HMS Endeavour, was to be a grandiose series of expensive events. Covid-19 has put a stop to much of the fanfare and Sydney events have been cancelled, however, other activities have taken place, not the least of which was a protest in Aotearoa (New Zealand) in October 2019 when Maori burnt union jacks in memory of nine of their people shot dead by Cook’s marines.
